Hi,
I'm Tim Hutchinson; I'm a middle school teacher at a poor school in a poor district in California. I am faced with classrooms full of reluctant readers. Now I truly believe that most students are reluctant readers because they haven't found the right book.
I decided to try and gamefully design a reading program. By that I don not mean read a book, take a test, earn a reward. I want something that will apply to any book at any level. Being a fan of Jane McGonigal, I used her book, Reality is Broken to set the parameters.
I want to plant the attached messages in some thick novel to recruit fluent readers. Fluent readers need to recruit some reluctant readers to go on a quest and read and blog about a book.
I thought it would be fun to use hidden messages and invisible ink to communicate to the teams.
I could use some collaborative help to figure out those quests, how we measure progress, how we keep it fun, and how we expand it to create a more literate community. candle1.jpg
