I am an academic librarian who is passionate about education. I love to work with researchers and people who want to see games motivate students to learn through a process and not focus solely on the end product.
What abilities would you bring to a collaboration?
I am the lead project director of a grant from the Instite of Museum and Library Services to create a Center for Games and Learning at MidAmerica Nazarene University. I bring education, library, and grant writing abilities. I believe (and am working on a study to prove it!) that games teach 21st century skills and that they teach grit.
\uap>I'm Tim Hutchinson; I'm a middle school teacher at a poor school in a poor district in California. I am faced with classrooms full of reluctant readers. Now I truly believe that most students are reluctant readers because they haven't found the right book. \uap>I decided to try and gamefully design a reading program. By that I don not mean read a book, take a test, earn a reward. I want something that will apply to any book at any level. Being a fan of Jane McGonigal, I used her book, Reality is Broken to set the parameters. \uap>I want to plant the attached messages in some thick novel to recruit fluent readers. Fluent readers need to recruit some reluctant readers to go on a quest and read and blog about a book. \uap>I thought it would be fun to use hidden messages and invisible ink to communicate to the teams. \uap>I could use some collaborative help to figure out those quests, how we measure progress, how we keep it fun, and how we expand it to create a more literate community. candle1.jpg
