Who wants to play?

I have been developing the ability to deliver A.R.G.s both traditionally and in single-story real time events. I am now running an ARG and would like to invite everyone to PLAY!

An essential part of design is to play with your games. What we offer is free, and would benefit greatly from the interaction of skilled game designers. So come to: and enter the open game: "The Long Game". I'd be happy if you did.But if you have a…

Game Based Learning

I'm doing research for my Masters in Education, and my focus is game based learning.  I thought I'd share some of the resources I've found here at Gameful.

I found the following videos on YouTube both interesting and informative:

  1. In The Gaming of Education Transformation ( Richard van Eck talks about how games promote collaboration, systems thinking, social…

Who Knows Someone ^2 - Social networking as a game (Concept)

Who Knows Someone ^2 ("Who knows someone who knows someone?") is a game of social networking. That is to say, to play, and "win", you must think about who you know and use it to make connections.

The concept is that people can fill out requests to be put in contact with subject matter experts, and include some personal information about who they are and why they want to be in contact with such as person. For example, an elementary school student, who wants to find a journalist they…

Multi-Classing in the Classroom

In a discussion of Gamification design for a classroom, a faculty member wanted to design a level system/point scale. In the discussion they wanted to have a point system for grades, but also non-point based incentives. The reason for the non-point incentives were to help encourage students to keep going in the class even if they met the threshold for success in the class already. Leveling was great, but if students got enough points in the class to reach level 6, which was a C, then why…

200,000 Teenagers undergo cosmetic plastic surgery

Dear Gamechangers,
in the USA, more than 200,000 Teenagers undergo Cosmetic Surgeries every year. Everywhere, beauty mania is growing among young people at alarming rates. TV programs such as Next Top Model give their audience an artificial and unhealthy idea of what beauty is. With the satirical card game “Pretty Ugly”, we play with popular cultural views and…

An MMORPG about relationships? (An Open Letter to Jane McGonigal and Gameful)

MMORPG's don't teach much about community, unless you consider your community people to beat up, take stuff from, or use to avoid micropayments.

So, herewith, a proposal:

The Nano Revolution, if you want

It started because of a song. In November 2012, I started writing The Nano Revolution, a 20 minute metal song about good intentions gone wrong. Early it became clear to me that listening to it for twenty minutes while staring at a still picture (I usually upload my songs in this format to YouTube) could be a little bit boring, so I decided to offer the listener something more engaging.

I decided against making a music video, because I highly doubt my ability to shoot a twenty minute…

Self-intoduction: an ecological approach to games.

I am a researcher in behavioral ecology. When I am not absorbed in stereotypes like hugging trees or going into endless composting sessions, I do research and sometimes help teaching science courses. I am passionate about biodiversity (the variation you can see every aspect of life) of behavior and personality among people, animals, or avatars within a given group, population or game. This biodiversity is what enables groups to tackle challenges and being resilient to…

Self-introduction and some thoughts on positive gamification methodology

This is my first blog post on gameful and I have to say I'm pretty excited. I watched both of Jane's TED talks and I believe she is onto something big.

About myself: I am a game designer with about five years of experience in the industry. I have worked freelance and as a lead designer for some PC and console games (check my linkedin page for details). Eight years ago, I left the industry to become a professional poker player. That second career was quite successful as it has brought…

I'm interested in creating a game that would spark a social movement around the country in the world. The only problem is I have no Game creating experience. I'm looking for people to help implement my idea and we went to inspire people to develop a community of people that inspires hope, belief and takes action to achieve what they are inspired to do in life. Let me know if you're interested.

Hello, World!

My name is Christian de Luna and I am a doctoral student at Teachers College, Columbia University researching games-based learning. My research interest mainly lies in how best to develop the field of educational games development and how to foster communication among developers, educators, and the general public to productively design and implement educational games.

Additionally, I am interested in learning game design and am currently working on a board game…

I talk about something Big

Hey Community,

I read through a lot of good ideas!

- The Warcraft concenpt

- The Educational aspect

- The Self improvement aspect

- Games without coding

What I am looking for is something really big. I believe that games like WoW etc. are just this successful because there is such a big community. And this community growth since the last years so tremendous because there is real fun and eagerness to play this game. I want this in…

Calling all game designers

I am a psychologist with a fairly good understanding of games. I have a community project which involves pulling together many different organizations in many different areas all with their own politics and needs. I believe if I can design an ARG where everyone starts out on the same level and there are enough incentives and chances of powering up and competing in ways that benefit the community, this will aid my work and make the annual event that I envisage, much more do- able. I live in Cape… Continue

Phd programs/Academic research into gaming and depression

Is there anyone who might be able to point me toward a PhD program in psychology that is studying games and depression? I'm working on a game similar in spirit to SuperBetter but targeting a much more severely depressed population. I have a fairly solid design already that I'm hoping to turn into a dissertation if I can find the right place to go.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Video Game Addiction

The past year was my final semester at school and I needed to complete my undergrad thesis. Professors suggest that you pick a topic that you are very interested in so that you can continue to work on it for the year without losing interest. With that in mind, I knew I had to do something video game related. I love video games, and I wanted to find a way to bring that together with the theme for our studies: design for humanity. Through some exploration of possible topics of interest, I…

Virtual Satisfactions and Crime

On my Wikia pages I have begun examining the possibility of a correlation between the rise of video games and the broad decrease in violent crime. While some headline incidents of violent crime have been linked in the press to video games, my theory presents this as the exception rather than the rule. If you'd like to discuss this, or help me elaborate on it, let me know. Thanks!…

It comes as no surprise to me that Canada’s cold and sparsely populated landscape is home to the third biggest videogame industry in the world. Spring is almost here now, but for five months out of the year, this constitutional monarchy is prime gamer territory. There are many adjectives to describe a Canadian winter, but i’m pretty sure the common consensus is that it is long as well as uncomfortably cold and hibernating becomes an activity not solely reserved for the bears in this country.…
